Every year Apple announces a new lineup of iPhones in September. And every year, rumors about the next iPhone start swirling around within the next few weeks. The same thing has happened this year too, as Apple is expected to launch a much better lineup of iPhones in 2020. iPhone 12 is expected to be the flagship model of that lineup, and as a result, many rumors about it are doing the rounds of the rumor-mill. So we decided to compile a list of top 4 rumors among them, which can bring the most drastic changes to your iPhone experience if interested in the new iPhones. Let’s take a look:
#1. A new chip
Apple has a tradition of upgrading the chip in every new iPhone model, so it’s almost certain that they’ll upgrade it this time too. Rumors suggest that iPhones launching in 2020 will come with Apple’s latest A14 Bionic Chip. This chip will be different from A13 Bionic of iPhone 11 because of its 5nm architecture, which will make it much better than the 7nm A13 Bionic chip. Not only it’ll be smaller than the previous chip but also much faster and efficient at the same time.
#2. 5G support with a Qualcomm modem
We’re entering the 5G era, so Apple is also likely to include the support for 5G technology in its iPhones launching next year. Rumors are suggesting that the company will use the Qualcomm X55 5G modem this time instead of the Intel modems which have been used till now. That is because company’s dispute with Qualcomm had already been settled earlier this year.
#3. New Face ID (and also No Face ID)
Three years ago Apple shook the technology industry with its robust Face ID feature that replaced the fingerprint authentication. To this day, Face ID continues to be the most secure and robust face recognition algorithm in the smartphone market, and Apple would want to continue in that leadership position with iPhone 12 as well. So, the company is highly likely to upgrade Face ID this year as well. Rumors have already been suggesting that Apple is likely to introduce new iPhones with a smaller and narrower notch this time. This may become possible because of a new camera sensor technology developed by Apple supplier AMS, which allows the IR proximity sensor and RGB light sensor to be put under the display. That can open the room for a smaller and narrower notch.
Some rumors have also suggested that one model of iPhone lineup to be launched in 2020 may not have any Face ID at all, and may come with an under-screen fingerprint scanner instead.
#4. 3D Sensing Camera
Triple-lens camera setup came to the iPhone line this year only, so it’s unlikely that Apple will add another lens to its iPhones in 2020. However, Apple may introduce the functionality of 3D sensing to enhance the features of Augmented Reality (AR) in the iPhone 12. In case you don’t know, a 3D sensing camera creates 3D maps of our surroundings with the help of laser technology.
What else?
Of course, there’s a lot more to the rumors than these 4 things alone, as it usually happens with every upcoming model of iPhone. Those things include a new display with Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) display technology (already used in Apple Watch Series 5) and introduction of USB Type-C ports in place of Lightning ports. But the 4 things discussed above are one of their kind, which is why we talked about them in greater detail. Of course, we’re keeping an eye on other rumors as well and will keep updating you about them as they emerge, so keep checking our updates.
